Food waste is the sustainability action with the highest individual impact that most people never think about. If global food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases on earth, after the USA and China.

Where the Waste Actually Happens

Studies of household food waste consistently identify the same categories in the same order: fresh vegetables and fruit (the single largest category — 45–50% of household vegetable purchases are thrown away in many European countries), bread and baked goods, and dairy products.   • Heating setpoint reduction. Reducing the heating thermostat by 1°C reduces heating energy consumption by approximately 6–10%. The average European home is heated to 21–22°C; 19–20°C is comfortable for most occupants in ordinary clothing and produces a 12–20% reduction in heating energy. The Priority Rule

The correct investment sequence: insulation first, then efficient heating, then renewable generation. Radiators that are hot at the bottom but cool at the top have trapped air that needs releasing. How to Shop More Sustainably Without Spending More —
or Sacrificing Convenience

Sustainable consumption is often framed as sacrifice — paying more, doing without, or accepting less convenience. The evidence suggests a different picture: the most sustainable purchasing decisions are frequently also the most economical ones.

The Most Sustainable Purchase Is Often No Purchase

Before any purchasing decision, the question that produces the most sustainable outcome is consistently: do I need this at all? The environmental impact of manufacturing almost any product — the extraction of raw materials, the energy of production, the emissions of transport — is dramatically larger than the impact of using it. A product not purchased has zero environmental cost; a product purchased and used once before being discarded has the full manufacturing cost with almost no utility recovered from it.

The practical implementation: introduce a waiting period for non-essential purchases. A 48-hour pause before buying anything that wasn't on a pre-existing need list eliminates a significant fraction of impulse purchases, most of which are not used sufficiently to justify their cost or environmental impact. Many of these purchases are not wanted after the impulse passes.

The Secondhand Market: Environmental and Economic Win

Buying secondhand products — clothing, furniture, electronics, books, sports equipment, kitchenware — eliminates the manufacturing footprint of a new product entirely. The product already exists; no additional resource extraction is required. For most product categories, secondhand options are also significantly cheaper than new equivalents — often 50–80% of the new price for items in good condition.

European secondhand markets have grown dramatically in the past decade across all categories. For clothing, platforms that connect individual sellers operate across most EU countries; for electronics, refurbished options certified by the manufacturer or third parties carry warranties equivalent to new products at 30–50% of new prices; for furniture, the range from auction houses to online platforms covers every budget and style.

The Longevity Principle

The single most sustainable purchasing decision for any durable good is buying the highest-quality version you can afford and using it for as long as possible. The environmental cost of manufacturing is amortised over the product's useful life: an appliance that lasts 15 years has a significantly lower annual environmental footprint than an equivalent appliance replaced every 5 years, even if the longer-lasting version was more energy-intensive to manufacture. Cheap goods replaced frequently are more resource-intensive than expensive goods maintained for decades.

The practical signals of longevity: repairable design (screws rather than glue, availability of spare parts, manufacturer support for repairs), brand reputation for durability, material quality over cosmetic appeal, and the presence of a meaningful warranty. Products from brands that explicitly offer repair services and spare parts for 10+ years signal design intent for longevity.

Certified vs. Uncertified Green Claims

Greenwashing — marketing claims of environmental benefit that are misleading or unsubstantiated — is pervasive across product categories. Understanding which certifications carry real verification and which are self-awarded or weakly audited allows purchasing decisions to be made on evidence rather than marketing.

Sustainable consumption is not primarily about buying the right green products — it is about buying fewer, better products, and keeping them longer.
